Many tree services in this area practice lion's tail pruning. This is the removal of excess inner branches and foliage. Lion's tailed trees develop unsightly sucker growth. Too much open canopy will induce sun scald on the primaries. Terminal ends over react from the loss of foliage. Left over branches over elongate. The plant will not develop stem taper. Structurally sound trees have well tapered stems and branches. Lion's tail pruning is practiced by those posing as professional. They claim to have over 20 years of experience. Trees should be pruned throughout the total canopy. Outer canopy pruning is critical. Knowledge of layering helps give forth broad and outreaching canopies. Cuts should not be flush. I use razor sharp sword quality steel. I prune by hand and NOT WITH A CHAIN SAW !!!!!!!
